Eco Friendly Products

The term biodegradable is associated with environmentally friendly products. What exactly does this mean? The meaning of biodegradation is breaking down of organic substances by the help of other living organisms such as bacteria and microbes. It helps out greatly in waste management and keeping the environment clean.

Now the trend of being eco-friendly is booming all over the world. Small and big companies are trying to contribute towards this cause. Going green is the new mantra. Eco-friendly products are becoming popular in the industrial as well as the corporate sector. These products not only help in promoting effective campaigns but also help in spreading the word about the company's social awareness and values. There are lot more benefits attached to it!

Eco-friendly products provide the imprinted brand related message also; this in turn elevates the brand image and reflects a positive impression amongst existing and potential customers, along with the repeated exposure of your logo.

Eco Friendly Products

Going green does not make money for you; but it saves your wealth, that's for sure. So it wouldn't be a foolish decision at all. These biodegradable products are not only meeting high standards of quality, durability and beauty, but they are also cost effective. There are compostable products like compostable plates, straws, containers, hot cups, cold cups, soufflé cups, bowls, etc.

Biodegradable party supplies are those products which can be thrown in the regular garbage. The compostable plates, straws, containers, hot cups, cold cups, souffle cups, will naturally biodegrade over time. These biodegradable tableware products replace non-biodegradable plastic and Styrofoam products that will NOT biodegrade and will fill our landfills forever.

Biodegradable tableware is as affordable and safe as it is environmental friendly. When disposed off with a commercial compost facility, biodegradable tableware takes only 50 to 100 days to completely compost. Disposable tableware is made from sugarcane fiber leftover after juice extraction. Normally, this residue is burned after pulping, thus creating air pollution. But this sugarcane fiber can be re-used - by being made into disposable products normally made from plastic or virgin paper. The tableware has no plastic or wax lining applied to it and can be used for both hot and cold items. Though, the tableware is soak proof, hot items will cause moisture/precipitation to form at the bottom of the tableware.

The best thing is that biodegradable packaging can reduce the amount of litter. All around the world, biodegradable packaging is moving into the mainstream. Progress in bio-technology means that plant based starches, for example sugar cane and corn, can be used as a more environmentally friendly alternative to conventional, petroleum based plastics.

If you are concerned about the durability of biodegradable shipping supplies, do not be. These types of shipping supplies may be biodegradable, but that does not mean that they are of a lesser quality and construction than shipping supplies that are not biodegradable. Biodegradable packaging is packaging that after use simply biodegrades harmlessly back into the earth.

How to Find a Free Deep Cycle Battery

Maybe you are looking for a set of deep cycle batteries to replace your old ones. Maybe you want to find a free deep cycle battery to try desulfating it so it is near new and then try to sell it. Some people are even getting a large deep cycle battery and removing all the good cells so they can sell them for renewable energy systems.

A home renewable energy system using wind or solar needs anywhere from 12 volts to 48 volts. Each cell from a deep cycle battery is about 2 volts, so it takes 6 cells for every 12 volt section. If you were to buy these cells new, then they cost between 0 - 0 each. A small 12 volt 650 amp hour battery setup would cost about ,800 for the forklift battery cells. You could use golf cart batteries at about each and 220 amp hours each. It would take 6 of them to do it and it would cost about 0.

Here is the kicker, though. A deep cycle battery cell from a fork lift battery lasts about 4 times as long as a golf cart battery. You could refurbish the cells out of the forklift battery and sell them for 0 each. They would easily last twice as long (or more) as the golf cart batteries and you could make a handsome profit for doing it.

How to Find a Free Deep Cycle Battery

My first pair of forklift batteries that I got for free happened to be Yuasa batteries, but all kinds are available. What I discovered is that usually most cells in the battery are still pretty good. Usually it is one or two bad cells. Most places just have their batteries picked up for recycling when the battery doesn't make it though a 8 hour shift. These two batteries to the left had all good cells except 3 of them. There are 12 cells in each (these are 24 volt, 700 amphour), so that gives me 21 good cells.

So, if you're selling these cells, you can make up to ,100 profit. If you keep them for your own use (which is what I did), then you could make 3 banks of 12 volts at 600 amp hours each, or 12 volts at 1800 amp hours total. I say 600 amp hours instead of 700 because even after checking fluid levels and using my homemade desulfator, the amp hour capacity never gets up to brand new levels. But you can usually get 70% to 90% capacity, especially if you remove the bad cells. In the above example, you will use 18 of the cells total, leaving 3 good ones. You will probably have to just recycle those last 3 cells.

To get the batteries free, just call around to anyplace with a warehouse that uses forklifts. The first two in the picture above were picked up at the local post office main hub. You could just go through the yellow pages. Ask if they use electric forklifts, if so, do they plan on replacing their batteries in the near future. If you have a pickup truck, I would stick with the 12 or 24 volt ones. You can tell them that you can take them off their hands for free and that you will sign any environmental forms that they require.

There is another way to get forklift batteries but it costs a little money. Just look in the phone book and find the local forklift company. Almost all of them sell new batteries and deliver them as well. But they will also come and pickup old forklift batteries to recycle. They always have several sitting around. On Vancouver Island in Canada, the local company gets about 3 cents per pound from the local recycler. I can go to the forklift company and pick the best of the used ones and pay by the pound. A 24 volt like the one above weighs about 1,100 pounds or so. I can move those with a engine hoist and my V6 nissan pickup. Any bigger and you need other arrangements. They will also deliver the batteries to my home and plop them wherever I like. At 3 cents a pound, I could pay for the two batteries in the above picture. Then they would charge about per hour for the delivery. Let's say, worse case, it cost 2 hours in labor, that is 6 for both batteries. If I sell individual cells in 12 volt groups, then I could sell 18 of them (3 cells were bad) and make ,800. That gives me ,600 profit. Not bad.

Global Warming - The Countries Most Affected

A worst case scenario scientific report predicted that we may very well be living on the South Pole in a hundred years. And even though many people find the idea too ridiculous to contemplate there are others that already feel the effects of global warming.

Some of the parts of the world already feeling the effects of climate change are;

Asia - Bangladesh and India have heavily populated low lying land. Rising sea levels and increase in rainfall due to global warming an increasing problem.

Global Warming - The Countries Most Affected

Africa - Increasing drought in an already food short continent.

Australia - Hotter conditions are fueling massive bush fires that are occurring more frequently.

Pacific and Indonesia - Recent earthquakes have caused a major disaster in Indonesia and Samoa is still mourning the after effects of a tsunami, as a result of an offshore earthquake. Rising sea levels also threaten some islands in the pacific. Predicted to be completely under water in the future are Kiribati, Tuvalu and Marshall Islands.

Europe - Yearly flooding is now the norm when snow in the alpines melts. Greece and Portugal are regularly experiencing wildfires during summer heat waves.

Latin America - The Amazon, already threatened by encroaching development is also threatened by increasingly dry weather.

North America - Hurricane Katrina is the worst experienced so far due to rising sea levels and a massive storm surge. The threat from hurricanes is now a yearly occurrence. Bush fires in California have claimed many lives and rising sea levels is also a problem.

The picture is constantly changing and the latest prediction, within the next 20 years the Arctic will be an open sea during summer. A disastrous outcome for polar bears, arctic foxes and many other animals that call the arctic home. The full effect on the rest of us still largely unknown

Advantages of Recycling

Recycling is one of the most rapidly and successfully evolving procedures of environmental conservation. In fact, it is among the most talked about issue these days and the increasing number of people is participating in recycling waste in varied ways. People have realized the importance to save the environment and thus they are trying their ever best possible move to use the items that are waste for them now in alternative ways. Recyclable products like glass, metal, paper and plastics are thus collected and then transported to the concerned facilities for converting them in finished products of alternative use.

Recycling aids in conserving the resources available for the future generations to come. It is because when the current generation utilizes the resources more efficiently by reusing them and converting them into newer products, they are saving the consumptions of the natural resources which will be thus rendered available for the generations to come. Another great advantage of recycling is that it largely prevents emission of the greenhouse gases like carbon dioxide into the atmosphere. The industrial processes that are involved in the manufacturing of different products often release these toxic greenhouses gases that can be well reduced by recycling.

Greenhouses gases usually affect ozone layer the most and deplete it decreasing its ability of blocking ultraviolet rays coming from the sun. As with recycling the emission of such gases is controlled and thereby there is lesser pollution. One great benefit is also this that it helps in conserving a lot of energy resources like petroleum and coal deposits.

Advantages of Recycling

What is interesting is that the by products of recycling are potent raw materials to be used in various manufacturing industries. Usually raw materials were obtained from the natural resources, but as after recycling the end-products can be put to use as well, it is like a double advantage. The only thing that needs to be bothered about is the immense potential that is invested in the recycling process as there is abundant labor, assembling, and transportation and breaking down involved in it. But that also means there are increased job opportunities as well.

The best advantage of recycling is that it helps in increasing an eco-friendly and greener environment. It is a very healthy solution to reduce pollution and promote healthy living.

Homemade Solar Hot Water Heater Plans - A Simple Way to Build a DIY Solar Powered Hot Water Heater

The need for hot water is an essential part of a human being's daily activity, with importance running in different ranges such as that from bathing to cooking to first aid and medicine. Electricity and consumption of resources are readily consumed to fulfill this necessity, in the United States of America alone, each household consumes an average of 1000 to 2000 gallons of oil every year just to heat up water and with an almost depleted source of fossil fuels in the earth's crust using hot water in ones home may sooner or later be considered a thing of the past. However with the development, innovation, and simple homemade diy solar hot water heater plans, life in terms of water heating can never be the same again.

Solar hot water heaters capture the sun's unlimited light energy and convert them to heat energy which is responsible for warming up the water source. Home made solar hot water heaters are usually built with aluminum window designed panes lined up with glass windows which act as solar panels or the catchers of the sun's radiant power. Within this glass made container are pipes and tubes which contain copper wires. The copper wires are used to turn the heat it receives to heat-up the stored water in the tank. The lacking step to finish off making a do it yourself home made solar water heater are connections between the device and the storage tank where one keeps the water which needs to be heated up.

The heating panel assembly is usually located below the tank; this is, so that natural movement of water is used to move around the water, need for pump to drive water is thus not needed lessening installation, manufacturing and processing costs.

Homemade Solar Hot Water Heater Plans - A Simple Way to Build a DIY Solar Powered Hot Water Heater

The heated water initially found near the heated port goes up in the tank and pushes the cold water down replacing it in the system, giving this time a chance for this water to be heated up. This cycle continues until most of the water system has gained thermal equilibrium.

Buying a solar hot water heater is already available in local market stores however building instead of purchasing a personal solar hot water heater is not only good for one's electric monthly consumption (by making the cost of heating water halved or totally eliminated), the environment (it is ecologically friendly giving off lesser pollution directly or indirectly) but also personal satisfaction in knowing that it was through one's own toil, sweat and hard work that such household apparatus was made. Initial cost is also much cheaper when making one as compared to buying, especially if one uses old, recyclable or about to be thrown away materials found hidden behind the shelves of the attic or the garage door.

Recycle Paper, Save Trees

We all have been using paper for as long as we can remember, starting when we were little kids drawing and scribbling trees and houses on sheets of paper until now that we have become adults and use paper for an endless variety of purposes in work and at home.

Even though we know that paper is an important part of our lives, we may not be aware that our careless usage of paper contributes to the accumulation of landfill in the country. Not only that, but production of paper costs more and more of the lives of trees, which are an essential part of the environment.

To help you save trees through paper recycling, reducing and reusing, here are some pointers to remember.

Recycle Paper, Save Trees

At Home
o Do not throw away boxes; reuse them as containers for different things. It is a good idea to wrap your boxes with used plastic covers to make them last a longer time.

o Encourage family members to always use both sides of the paper so that it will not be wasted.

o When writing memos or notes, make use of a pencil so that if you make a mistake you can just erase it and reuse the paper.

o Collect old newspapers, office papers and magazines from neighbors and start a paper drive. Old newspapers and office papers can go into the recycling centers in your neighborhood while old magazines can be donated to clinics and establishments with waiting areas.

o Donate your old books or your children's to schools and libraries.

o Buy recycled paper products and close the recycling loop.

o Make recycling easier for everyone by placing recycling bins in strategic locations in the house.

o Delegate tasks on recycling duties so that everyone gets their fair share of workload.

o Make games out of the recycling program so that it will be more exciting for family members to participate in it.

In School
o Educate children about the importance of paper recycling.

o Let your kids bring home paper they used in school instead of throwing them into the trash.

o Encourage kids to always draw or write on both sides of the paper.

o Request schools in your vicinity to start their own recycling programs.

At the Workplace
o Request the company to provide recycling bins.

o Talk to the management about giving incentives to employees who participate well in reduction of paper use. The company will be more than happy to oblige with that since you will show them that this will greatly cut down the company's expenses on paper.

o Promote the use of interoffice emails instead of paper memos.

o Use printers and copiers that have the option to print and copy on both sides.

o Encourage staff or co-workers to participate in the recycling program.

Trees serve as a habitat for many animals in the wildlife. Trees give us shade, fresh air and prevent floods by absorbing water through its roots. The priceless benefits offered by these wonderful gifts of nature are endless. This is why it is very important that we do our share in reducing the use of paper, reusing old and used paper and recycle paper whenever it is possible.

Top Ten Causes of Global Warming (Part 1)

Global warming has been discussed over and over again. In recent months even politicians like Al Gore have gotten involved. He created a documentary called, "An Inconvenient Truth", to try and push for more action as well as to enlighten the public. His view is that there are solid facts that global warming exists and skeptic scientists don't. Many people believe that global warming does not exist because they are not being affected directly; however, scientists believe that the increase in natural disasters comes from global warming.

In NY, I hear a few people here and there saying, "you call this global warming" just because the temperature is at 10 degrees even though this winter it only snowed once compared to the past. Have you ever seen the painting of George Washington sailing across the Delaware River? If you have, you know there is ice in that water. Now if you look at that river during the time of year that picture was taken, there is no ice. What about in the summer when you feel the heat of the sun and realize it is a little hotter now then a few years ago? That could all be in your mind due to media hype and all, but how can you tell?

Where does all this global warming stem from anyway? Who or what is the cause of all this debate and discussion? Some People are afraid and they want answers to their questions. The following is the list of the top 10 causes of global warming. With all the facts laid out, one can make a better decision about what global warming is and how it might affect them.

Top Ten Causes of Global Warming (Part 1)

1. Carbon Dioxide From power Plants

One of the largest contributors to global warming is said to be pollution from power plants. Every time you turn on a light, you add to the tons of carbon spewed into the sky by long tubes connected to these massive coal or oil driven "machines". According to recent studies, approximately 40% of all carbon dioxide emissions comes form power plants. Natural gas, coal, and oil are the 3 types of polluting power plants. Coal is the biggest contributor out of the 3 because of it releases more carbon than the rest of them per capita. Studies, like the one done in the film, "An Inconvenient Truth", show that the levels of carbon in the atmosphere has increased drastically in recent years and will probably continue to increase in the years to come.

Some skeptics believe that the levels of carbon are completely normal. According to http://www.geocraft.com, the levels of carbon found in the atmosphere today mirror those found hundreds of thousands of years ago. They believe the scientific "proof" that global warming exists is taken out of cortexes because they look at the past 100 years instead of the bigger picture. The earth has been around of billions of years; earthquakes, monsoons, ice ages, meteors, and so forth, have all affected the earth without destroying every living thing on it.

Despite what others say, many people have created solutions for the pollution caused by power plants. For example, products that help to reduce the green house emissions have emerged. Filters that improve the quality of the air released into the atmosphere have been created to solve this problem. In addition, government regulations have been placed to force owners of large industrial buildings to improve the quality of the air produced by their buildings. Finally, hydrogen power has also become a way of reducing carbon. According to Tom Simonite of http://www.newscientisttech.com, using carbon is better than using water to generate power, and it is completely environmentally friendly.

2. Pollution Emitted from Cars

Driving to work in the morning is one example of this. When your stuck in traffic, how long does your car stay idle on the road, releasing it's pollution into the air? There are approximately, 3 billion vehicles being used today. Similarly with the power plants, cars also emit carbon into the air. Cars emit millions of tons of pollutants into the air. In some dense cities, this causes some of the smog and ozone problems. 1,500 cases of cancer are reported each year from pollution according to http://www.nsc.org.

Luckily, solutions are available. Many ask, "What can I do." One thing that can be done is a switch to more environmentally friendly vehicles such as hybrid or electric cars. Some countries are even using cars that run on hydrogen. In the near future, talk about ethanol to replace gasoline in cars seems to be a promising change.

3. Pollution from Trucks

Trucks, although less in volume, make up for a large portion of the earth's pollution with each truck's individual output of pollutants. The difference between cars and trucks is the type of fuel used to run them. Diesel, the standard for trucks and other vehicles used for carrying large loads, is known to be less clean than gasoline. Trucks roaring down streets can bee seen from a mile away with a tiny smoke stack blowing out the product of having to carry large amounts of goods from one place to the other.

How can our society get rid of trucks? They are vital for the economic health of certain companies. They are used to build homes and carry supplies, People go camping and carry gear with them, and the list goes on. According to http://www.ucsusa.org, diesel is reaching a point where it can no longer meet the standards of government regulations. What kind of alternative can be used instead?
